The average Aussie moves house 13 times in their lifetime. If you have a pet living with you, you can imagine the uncertainty and stress it can potentially cause for them. So if you are packing up and moving soon, we have gathered some helpful tips for the smoothest transition for you and your pets
Before and During the Move
Contact your vet
First and foremost, it is a good idea to contact your current vet and tell them about your move. If you are moving to a new neighbourhood you will need to update your pet’s information to your new address (especially for the microchip) and take a copy of your pet’s records with you. Your vet might also be able to give you a good recommendation for a great vet in your new neighbourhood. This way you’ll rest assured your pet is still in good hands!
Check the new surroundings
Before you move your pets in, it’s always a good idea to take a good look at the surroundings you will be introducing them into. Cats and dogs are territorial animals, meaning they regard their surroundings as their own. Once they are separated from the comfort of their own territory, they may become anxious and agitated and feel the need to escape. That is why it is important to check your surroundings to make sure your home and yard are as comfortable as possible. Things to check for include busy roads, snakes, ticks, poisonous plants and other pets in neighbouring yards. By being proactive, you can ensure your pets are moving into a safe and secure environment and avoid any disasters.
Helpful tip
If you have a young pet or you know they are easily agitated, it might be best to seek a short vacation for them. You could contact a friend, relative or kennel for your pet to stay during the move so that they are kept away from the disruption, loud noises and strangers that will be coming and going during the moving process.
After the Move
Comfort is key
Once you have made the move, you should give your pets lots of attention and affection (even more than usual!) and make them feel at home with familiar toys and blankets. In order to get your pet settled as quickly as possible, try to incorporate a meal and exercise routine so they adjust to their new environment whilst still feeling the comfort of their familiar routine.
After you’ve introduced your pet into their new home, it’s a good idea to stay with them as much as possible to reassure them that they are not alone in this foreign place. For cats, it is recommended that they stay confined in a small room and gradually introduced to the rest of the house.
